Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements from skipper Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made this message in multiple interviews in the wake of England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes against Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had let his message to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

But, following Crawley made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" comment after England suffered a loss in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The team afterwards went on a holiday to Noosa between the second and third Tests.

Before this match, he revealed his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Yet, Crawley stated the guidance from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their previous tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this game."

The Hosts Close of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's wicket on day four came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – left England 207-6 in pursuit of a notional target of 435 runs.

This means, Australia require four wickets on the final day to secure an insurmountable three-nil lead with three Tests.

Defeat would prolong England's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes series defeat.

This series is set to be decided in only 11 days of cricket – after England fell the initial matches in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. They're a very, very good side. It was inevitably tough coming here against them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Place In Question

While the opener's performance in the third Test likely secures questions about his immediate place in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 in England's second innings on Saturday, extending his modest returns versus the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, the opener insisted any notion Pope is under the microscope comes from "the media" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is noise externally. There's no discussion like that on Ollie amongst the players," he concluded.
