The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.
Video review systems will make its debut at The Championships this year.
Athletes are granted the ability to question specific decisions made by the official, following the protocol already in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.
This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.
This step comes just a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to review specific decisions, such as:
- Whether a ball has bounced twice.
- If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.
Notably, there is no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.
A Recent Example
A recent incident took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.
Broader Adoption
Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system in place at all of its events.
Further Updates
A further innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was out or in.
Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
