Federal Reserve Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year amid economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed typically studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, such as the count of employment gains created to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in early September, before the closure, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of jobs created to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the shutdown started. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, a trend he had previously attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are rising, although gradually. Prices rose 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
