Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for several hours when numerous of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend passed through the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and near the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that these practices become unprofitable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
